Homemade Cafe, which closed suddenly on January 1, 2024, is set to reopen with the help of Rohit Singh, CEO of Breads of India. Singh, who was deeply affected by the closure, persuaded owner Collin Doran to partner with him in taking over the lease. Though the café faced closure due to various financial factors, including rising costs and changes in the community after COVID-19, Doran’s Everybody Eats initiative provided meals without contributing to these troubles. The café, originally opened in 1979, plans to continue its unique service model and community support initiatives.
When the beloved corner cafe closed suddenly on Jan. 1, 2024, Singh was in India and only learned about it on social media. "I had tears in my eyes. I thought, How can this happen?"
Doran is grateful to Singh not only for his financial help, but also for the support of a collaborator. "After we closed, I never thought we would come back, he said, I went through the 12 stages of grief."
Doran got national attention for his Everybody Eats initiative, which offered a free breakfast to anyone who needed one, but he says that the heartfelt initiative did not cause financial troubles; he received more than enough contributions from his regular customers to cover the cost.
Doran said service will still be included in the bill in place of tips, and the Everybody Eats program will return with Homemade's reopening.
