"We're expecting high temperatures in the New York City area to be falling as we get into the start of 2025," Fox Forecast Center meteorologist Christopher Tate told The Post. "By the time we get into next week, we may not be escaping the 30s," Tate said, later adding, "It's going to be chilly, for sure." This emphasizes the drastic temperature drop expected for the city as it heads into the new year.
"Any storm track that changes, even just 50 miles to the north of the South, will have a significant impact on whether we get snow, ice or rain in the metro. It's a very fine line that we have to walk to get a bona fide snowstorm here in New York City," Tate said. This highlights the uncertainty and the critical nature of small shifts in the storm track affecting weather outcomes.
"The Climate Prediction Center at NOAA is still forecasting a likelier chance of below-average temperatures for pretty much everybody east of the Mississippi through mid-January," Tate said. This points to a significant weather pattern that could affect a large portion of the eastern U.S. for weeks.
Forecasters say there's a potential for a snowstorm to develop during the first week of January. Based on long-range data, January has the potential to be the coldest across the US since 2014, forecasters told The Post on Monday. This underscores the severity of the winter conditions expected and their potential historical significance.
