Despite showing signs of infection, hospital staff failed to recognize these symptoms, particularly in relation to his neurodivergence. His parents had taken him to the emergency department multiple times within a week, but critical blood tests and antibiotics were not administered. Following an inquest, it was concluded that timely treatment could have saved his life. The hospital later issued an apology and settled with the family without admitting fault.
Coroner Mary Hassell stated that a significant oversight in Daniel's treatment stemmed from a profound lack of recognition of sepsis signs in neurodivergent children.
The Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust publicly apologized for the care Daniel received, acknowledging the distressing circumstances surrounding his treatment and subsequent death.
