After the implementation of congestion pricing, residents in Upper Manhattan have faced increased parking difficulties due to more cars coming from outside the city. In response, a new bill proposed by Council Member Carmen De La Rosa seeks to introduce a paid residential parking permit system in the area, reserving 80% of parking spaces for locals. While some residents see this as a potential solution, concerns remain about the lack of guaranteed parking despite the fee required for permits, leading to mixed reactions among the community.
"Have you noticed since congestion pricing started that there are more and more cars coming from outside of the city parking on our local streets, and they're taking up valuable curbside space for free?" - Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine.
"I think [parking permits] is something good for the residents because in Upper Manhattan it is very, very, very, very hard to find parking." - Rudy Almonte, retired police officer.
"If you guarantee [a spot], more people would be interested, I think. But if it's not [guaranteed], what's the point?" - Owen McFarlane, hospital worker.
"I can see why residents would want it to just be them [parking] where they live." - Owen McFarlane, highlighting the residents' perspective.
