Martin Fengler, founder of Meteomatics, leverages his background in numerical weather prediction to address gaps in weather data consumption for pilots. Recognizing the limitations of traditional forecasts, he established Meteomatics in 2012, which integrates data from over 110 sources and autonomous drones to provide hourly updates and precise predictions. The company's API allows clients to customize data usage, including AI applications. Fengler emphasizes that standardizing complex weather data formats sets Meteomatics apart in the commercial weather industry, focusing on enterprise needs rather than just individual consumers.
It was dealing with complicated large files, data formats that are very specific to these industries, there is little standard around that. Bringing APIs to this industry was like bringing the light to the blind.
I learned a lot about weather forecasting from a user perspective. It's, of course, much different than looking to the weather forecast as a mathematician and minimizing error measures.
