In 1988, Rod Matthews was convicted of second-degree murder after killing classmate Shaun Ouillette at age 14. After serving 37 years, he has now been granted parole.
The Massachusetts Parole Board noted that Matthews has demonstrated a level of rehabilitation, concluding that his release is compatible with the welfare of society.
Matthews had previously expressed a desire to understand what it was like to kill someone, which led to the tragic decision to murder Ouillette.
On the day of the murder, Matthews lured Ouillette into the woods and inflicted fatal injuries with a baseball bat, later downplaying the act as 'just for the heck of it.'
