Madison Keys' mental breakthrough helps her unlock potential at last
Briefly

Madison Keys, at 29, became the oldest first-time women's singles Australian Open champion after defeating Aryna Sabalenka. Acknowledging the importance of mental health, she credited her recent success to a significant personal transformation guided by therapy, including working with a sports psychologist and adopting major changes in her game. Supported by her coach and husband Bjorn Fratangelo, Keys modified her equipment and service, challenging herself physically and mentally to achieve her lifelong dream.
I really kind of bought into it, she said. I think in the past I had always tried to go the sports therapy route where it was more about routine and controlling things you can control and all of that.
After seeing a sports psychologist for a long time, Keys says that addressing her mental health and approach in general therapy, and putting herself in uncomfortable positions, helped her to break through.
