Locals Pushback on Empire Boulevard Rezoning Due to Shade, Displacement Fears
Briefly

Crown Heights residents voiced strong opposition to a proposed 13-story mixed-use building at Empire Boulevard and McKeever Place during a public hearing. The concern centered around the development overshadowing local play areas and failing to offer affordable housing. Proposed by Bridges Development Group, the project includes 261 apartments—only 78 of which would be rent-stabilized—and significant commercial space. While developers argue it could revitalize the area and create jobs, locals fear it would exacerbate existing issues with affordability and community character.
The site is a real blight right now...we're looking to revitalize the streetscape here with active uses...in addition to providing much needed housing, and, of course, affordable housing as well.
Neighbors expressed significant concerns about the proposed 13-story development, stating it would overshadow playgrounds and fail to meet local housing needs.
Local residents voiced fears the project won't be affordable for the community and risks increasing shadow over children's play areas.
The developers claim the plan will stimulate the economy and create jobs while offering some rent-stabilized units under the Mandatory Inclusionary Housing program.
