India tests first direct train linking Delhi and Kashmir DW 01/27/2025
Briefly

A trial run of the Katra-Srinagar railway line has concluded, set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi next month. The 272-km Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL) connects Delhi to Srinagar, cutting travel time to 13 hours. With a construction cost of $4.28 billion, the project involves a significant engineering feat, including the Chenab Bridge, the world's highest railway bridge. Modi emphasized that this rail link enhances connectivity and transforms Indian Railways in efficiency and passenger experience. The project faced challenges due to the Himalayan terrain and extreme weather conditions.
"On the basis of inspection report, trains will start running on this track. A new chapter has been written in the history of Indian Railways. Best of the world technology has been used here."
"Integration of Jammu and Kashmir into the national railway network is a monumental step towards transforming Indian Railways into a global leader in efficiency, speed, and passenger experience."
