Despite the hopeful launch of the Nightjet connecting Berlin and Paris, the expected growth of night trains in Europe faces significant hurdles including profitability and operational challenges.
"There is no real night train renaissance," states Juri Maier, Chairman of Back on Track Germany, highlighting a disconnection between political promises and the actual development of night train services in Europe.
French Transport Minister Clement Beaune applauded the Nightjet's launch, calling it a highlight for Europe and the environment, yet one year later, challenges remain unresolved.
Operational difficulties such as high track access fees and lack of coordination in construction have impeded the expansion and profitability of night trains.
