Elon Musk's X hit with $140M fine from European Commission
"X did not immediately respond to Axios' request for comment."
""The EU should be supporting free speech not attacking American companies over garbage," Vice President JD Vance said on X on Thursday."
""On X, anyone can pay to obtain the 'verified' status without the company meaningfully verifying who is behind the account, making it difficult for users to judge the authenticity of accounts and content they engage with," the announcement said. "This deception exposes users to scams.""
""dissemination of illegal content and the effectiveness of the measures taken to combat information manipulation.""
X was fined by the European Commission under the Digital Services Act for shortcomings related to its paid blue verification checkmark, advertisement repository, and refusal to provide public data to researchers. The Commission said paid verification allows anyone to buy 'verified' status without meaningful identity checks, hindering users' ability to judge account authenticity and exposing users to scams. The advertisement repository reportedly fails transparency and accessibility requirements due to delays and hidden critical information. X must present a plan for blue check handling within 60 working days and plans for advertising and public data issues within 90 working days. A 2023 investigation targeted dissemination of illegal content and measures against information manipulation. X's new location feature exposes political accounts based outside the U.S.
