Elizabeth line train traveled at nearly double permitted speed - accident report finds
Briefly

In September of last year, an Elizabeth line train veered onto a parallel track due to a circuit failure, resulting in a dangerous speed violation at a junction rated for 25mph. The train reached 45mph, leading to a jolt that knocked some passengers off their feet. The Rail Accident Investigation Branch concluded this was due to the driver’s lack of awareness regarding the diversion and inadequate training. Furthermore, poorly maintained warning signs exacerbated the situation, prompting apologies from the operator for the stress caused to passengers.
The sudden movement of the train caused some passengers to lose their footing, with at least one reported to have fallen to the floor.
The driver’s unfamiliarity with the diversion route and the junction’s speed limit were key factors in the incident according to the Rail Accident Investigation Branch.
Improperly located and dirty warning signs contributed to the incident, violating internal guidance on maintaining trackside indicators.
Our operator, MTREL, acknowledged the issue and communicated promptly with regulatory bodies following the incident.
