Damage is piling up': has the Netherlands forgotten how to cope with snow?
"We just don't have the winters that we had in the 20th century. It's not only my frustration. It's a Dutch frustration. It's a climate frustration."
"I was blue in the face with frustration."
"We saw that bike lanes were in such a state that you really don't dare to get on your bike,"
Up to 15cm of snow fell across the Netherlands with temperatures down to −10°C including wind chill, triggering over 20,000 flight cancellations, widespread road and rail chaos, and partial building collapses. Cyclists reported uncleared cycle lanes that forced children and riders into traffic. The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute records a long-term decline in snow cover at De Bilt from an average of 23 days in 1961 to just three days now. The long pause since the last Elfstedentocht in 1997 highlights fewer cold winters. Fietsersbond is investigating reports of dangerous, snow-filled bike lanes in several towns.
