On his first day in office, President Trump issued an executive order attempting to redefine birthright citizenship to exclude children of noncitizens, triggering numerous lawsuits and immediate legal challenges. Legal experts assert that Trump lacks the authority to unilaterally redefine citizenship without Congressional approval and cite the 14th Amendment as a barrier to his initiative. Federal judges have begun blocking the order, labeling it "blatantly unconstitutional" and signaling a protracted legal battle that may escalate to the Supreme Court.
The first question is, does the president on his own have the power to redefine citizenship? There is nothing in law or the Constitution that permits it.
Even if you could point to some law supporting the executive order, it's unconstitutional. The 14th Amendment clearly outlines who is classified as a citizen.
