The drying out and degradation of Earth’s land is an existential crisis potentially affecting 5 billion people by the century's end, driven primarily by climate change.
"The land degradation crisis receives far less attention than climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, despite the fact that over 100 million hectares of land are degraded each year," said David Goodman.
UNCCD chief Ibrahim Thiaw emphasized that drought is a phenomenon impacting countries and biomes globally, stating even the Philippines experienced drought for the first time this year.
With land degradation forcing increasing numbers to migrate, COP16 aims to create a global framework to enhance resilience and promote land restoration efforts worldwide.
