The Illinois Supreme Court has determined that the involvement of a special prosecutor after previous charges were dropped raised significant legal concerns surrounding Jussie Smollett’s case.
The court emphasized that a ruling against Smollett would set a precedent where agreements made among parties, especially those that have been relied upon, wouldn’t be honored, which could lead to greater injustices.
Smollett's defense argued he had already served community service and forfeited a bond, asserting that pursuing further prosecution was not only unjust but also contrary to the legal agreements made.
During his trial, Smollett maintained that he was a true victim of a hate crime, dismissing the notion that the attack was a hoax orchestrated for publicity.
