Junior Barros De Oliveira, 29, has been charged in the U.S. for threatening to release stolen customer data from a Brazilian subsidiary and demanding ransom payments.
After hacking into the network of a Brazilian subsidiary, De Oliveira allegedly stole confidential information on about 300,000 customers and extorted payment through Bitcoin.
In communications with the company's executives, De Oliveira expressed interest in 'helping' them fix the security issues while demanding additional payments in Bitcoin for his services.
Each extortion count carries a potential five-year prison sentence, illustrating the serious legal consequences of cyber threats and data breaches.
