Books Inc. has announced the closure of its Berkeley store on Shattuck Avenue as part of a Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization. Despite relocating in 2015 with high hopes for commercial success, the store has struggled with sales, particularly post-pandemic. The failure to negotiate a reduced lease led to the decision to close, marking this as the only store closure among the company's 11 locations. Books Inc., the oldest independent bookstore in the western U.S., previously declared bankruptcy in 1995 but aimed to maintain sustainability through the current restructuring efforts.
The Berkeley location, a shift from Fourth Street to Shattuck Avenue aimed at revival, will close February 9, 2023, amid ongoing sales struggles post-pandemic.
Despite hopes for success at the new site in a vibrant area, the store underperformed, compounded by unsuccessful lease negotiations and declining sales since the pandemic.
