The Biden administration's rollout of electric vehicle charging stations, aimed at combating 'range anxiety', is struggling, with only 102 operational units in nine states after a $7.5 billion pledge.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg emphasized that while $7.5 billion is allotted for the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program, most chargers will see construction only in the second half of the decade.
Buttigieg acknowledged the complexity of establishing charging stations, stating, 'In order to do a charger, it's more than just plunking a small device into the ground—there's utility work involved, and this is a new category of federal investment.'
Despite the Biden administration's goals, the first quarter of 2024 showed a decline in EV sales from 8.1 percent to 7.0 percent, indicating a potential loss of interest in electric vehicles.
