According to the Santa Clara County District Attorney, the hospital system is facing scrutiny for illegally disposing of hazardous waste, including human flesh and blood vials, highlighting significant environmental and public health concerns.
The investigation began after several inspections revealed the hospitals had disposed of tens of thousands of items improperly, leading to potentially hazardous contamination of tons of trash.
Bud Porter stated, "If you put hazardous waste somewhere where it's not supposed to go, now you've got a problem where the leachate... is now contaminated with medical waste or hazardous waste."
DA investigators are taking action against Santa Clara Valley Healthcare in response to findings similar to those that led to a $49 million settlement with Kaiser Permanente for illegal waste disposal.
