A space for solace': Stonehenge show explores attraction of stone circles
Briefly

An exhibition at Stonehenge showcases the work of three young artists exploring the relevance of stone circles in contemporary society. Rather than focusing solely on the well-known Stonehenge, the exhibit highlights lesser-known circles in Dorset and Derbyshire, emphasizing their importance in fostering community and connection. Yuxi Hou, one of the featured artists, notes that these ancient sites serve as gathering places where individuals seek solace and a reconnection with nature. The exhibition reflects a growing interest in spiritual and communal experiences, especially in the wake of the Covid pandemic and increasing global challenges.
Stone circles bring people together, she said. I think people want to connect to nature, to the land, to the people around them. It's a human thing, very natural.
Arbor Low has been a gathering place for thousands of years, Hou said. It is a living space. When I was there I felt like it's really a safe space for everybody to find solace.
Stonehenge offers a unique backdrop for photographers looking to capture the connection between ancient structures and contemporary human experiences.
There has been a noticeable rise in people visiting stone circles after the Covid crisis and as concerns about global issues such as the climate emergency have increased.
