The IFCN Arabic Coalition, consisting of seven Arabic-speaking fact-checking entities, expresses concern over Meta's discontinuation of its third-party fact-checking program in the U.S., arguing it impacts the already fragile information environments in the MENA region. With a population of approximately 473.27 million, this region suffers from misinformation fueled by dominated mainstream media. Meta's algorithms significantly influence independent media, yet journalists face challenges like content suppression. The coalition stresses the necessity of fact-checking to mitigate harms, especially in politically unstable contexts.
Our coalition comprises seven fact-checking entities operating across countries such as Sudan, Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Egypt and others across the MENA region.
The fact-checking program has been a critical tool for mitigating harm and preserving the integrity of information in fragile ecosystems.
