Metacognition means observing and evaluating one's own thinking and decision criteria. Noticing evaluation habits allows changing goals from appearing clever to improving clarity and usefulness. Asking questions like "Is this clear?", "Will this example land?", and "What am I assuming the reader knows?" redirects effort toward effective communication. The brain learns by predicting outcomes, acting, observing results, and updating mental models. Automatic learning is fast but vulnerable to recent events, mood, and invisible biases, and it cannot inspect its own processes. Pausing to assess confidence and the basis for reasoning improves the learning process and interpretation of experiences.
