Practical optimism is a realistic, actionable alternative to toxic positivity, developed by psychiatrist Dr. Sue Varma. Only 25% of optimism is genetic, with the remainder learned. The framework targets both daily “little t” traumas like hassles, breakups, and job losses and major “Big T” traumas such as 9/11. Studies cited link optimism to a 35% lower risk of heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular death and to nearly a 40% lower risk of dementia among the most optimistic people versus the most pessimistic, even after controlling for exercise, smoking, depression, and chronic illness.
