In a remarkable turn of events following a spearfishing accident, David Labrador was struck by a boat propeller, resulting in significant lacerations to his thigh and rear. He focused on keeping his leg intact while bystanders, notably an off-duty firefighter, acted quickly to stop his bleeding using a makeshift tourniquet. Fort Lauderdale emergency responders coordinated efficiently, bringing Labrador to a trauma facility in under 20 minutes. After extensive treatment, including 40 staples, Labrador made a swift recovery and returned to walking and work only days later, showcasing the effectiveness of teamwork in emergencies.
"I just kept saying, 'Save my leg, save my leg,'" Labrador expressed, highlighting the immediate fear and urgency he felt after the accident.
Deputy Fire Chief Garrett Pingol emphasized, "This is an example of everybody working together between the 911 system, early notification bystanders helping, our crews working together. "
Firefighter paramedic Charles Stevenson noted, "I initially thought as soon as I take (the makeshift tourniquet) off, it was going to start bleeding a lot, but it didn't."
Stevenson remarked on the quick response time, stating, "Applying all my training, I had to make sure that he was okay and to get him to the trauma hospital immediately."
