A severe heatwave is currently impacting vast regions of the United States, with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit. This climate crisis has led to an alarming rise in fatalities, estimated at 500 deaths annually in New York City alone, and thousands nationwide. The phenomenon is part of a global issue, with countries like the U.K. and India also facing dire heat-related health risks. The extreme temperatures primarily affect vulnerable groups, particularly the elderly and those without air conditioning, increasing the strain on electric grids due to high AC usage.
Extreme heat disproportionately slays the elderly and vulnerable, including laborers and those who don't have access to air conditioning. At its most extreme, a wet-bulb temperature can cause death in virtually anybody, even if they're otherwise healthy.
This is the deadliest weather threat we face in New York City - treat it that way. Don't wait until you feel sick. Heat builds. It compounds. It kills quietly.
