A global mental health crisis is evident, with about 13.9% of the population experiencing mental disorders in 2021, particularly anxiety and depression. Factors contributing to this surge include the long effects of COVID-19, social media isolation, and economic pressures. While having a life purpose is important and can aid those experiencing purpose anxiety, it does not address the underlying causes of mental illness. Such illnesses often arise from biological, psychological, and environmental interactions rather than a mere lack of purpose, requiring deeper reflection and sometimes medication for healing.
Purpose is valuable. Having a reason to get out of bed in the morning, to contribute, to grow-these things are essential to a meaningful and fulfilling life.
Mental illness, as we know from decades of research, is rarely caused by one thing. It often develops through the interaction of genetic predispositions, early life experiences, chronic stress, and neurological or chemical imbalances.
