Suffering is an inevitable aspect of life, and while it is challenging, it can foster personal growth and deeper empathy. As a psychologist, the author encounters individuals enduring varying degrees of suffering, from mild discontent in their jobs to profound grief from loss. The focus is not simply on alleviating pain but helping clients find meaning in their experiences. Through suffering, individuals can develop a greater understanding of themselves and others, leading to a richer, more compassionate existence.
Suffering can promote empathy. I work with a lot of physicians... the healers suffer too! Some of the doctors I have seen in therapy are excellent, not because they are free from symptoms but because of their symptoms.
In my nearly twenty years as a psychologist, I have seen suffering become a gift to many. Maybe it will become a gift to you one day.
No one wishes to suffer, myself included. Nor do people want to hear that their suffering is a gift, but that is exactly what it often ends up being.
The true goal, as I see it, is to help my clients grow and make meaning from the suffering.
