Julia Moore Vogel, a computational biologist afflicted by severe long COVID, emphasizes the importance of pacing through technology. Utilizing wrist-worn motion-tracking devices, she aids in identifying energy levels, preventing post-exertional malaise. Having faced a 90% reduction in stamina, Vogel continues her scientific contributions while managing her condition. She highlights the ongoing challenges of long COVID, particularly as awareness grows about its long-term impacts on those affected, aiming to improve treatment approaches and understanding of this complex syndrome.
A lot of people have found that, through continuous monitoring, they can see when their body battery is getting low before they even feel it and proactively rest.
What we've learned is that there seems to be this sort of cliff you can fall off of that we call post exertional malaise, Vogel said.
Vogel has found ways to keep participating in science, helping to push the quest for potential treatments forward.
As the fifth anniversary of the pandemic in California arrives, she took time to discuss the challenges experienced daily by those who continue to experience severe symptoms.
