"It is that time of year when there seems to be no end to the demands on our time and energy. There is always an event or gathering, and while it might be nice to have a break from the same day-to-day routine, many neurodivergent people find the holidays exhausting. It is easy to over-extend and exhaust yourself. That's why I put together this guide to taking care of yourself during the holidays. Use these 5 tips to prioritize your self-care this holiday season."
"Between family gatherings, work holiday parties, religious ceremonies, community events, and more, this can be an incredibly busy time of year. You might feel obligated to try and fit every possible thing in, but this is a recipe for a crash. Consider your energy needs. How much can you reasonably do and still attend to your own needs? Does that mean no more than one gathering per day, every three days, or per week?"
The holiday season brings frequent events and obligations that can overwhelm and exhaust neurodivergent people. Overextending leads to crashes and reduced well-being. Prioritizing self-care involves limiting the schedule to a manageable number of gatherings based on personal energy needs and sticking to those limits. Communicating unavailability protects energy without detailing every minute. Setting boundaries in interactions reduces exposure to intrusive questions and uncomfortable comments about body, relationships, or personal choices. Identifying triggers and planning rest between events helps maintain balance and allows participation at a sustainable pace during busy holiday periods.
