Ice baths have evolved from early applications in ancient Egypt to modern-day wellness trends embraced by athletes and celebrities. A new study from the University of South Australia highlights that cold-water immersion can lead to short-term reductions in sick days but does not affect illness duration. While many believe cold baths immediately relieve stress, the study suggests inflammation can increase right after exposure, with stress reduction occurring hours later. Sleep quality may improve, but benefits largely fade beyond three months, challenging the long-term efficacy of ice baths for overall wellness.
The study indicates that while cold-water immersion may reduce sick days, it does not affect the duration of illnesses when they occur. Overall mood remains unchanged, and benefits to sleep and wellbeing tend to dissipate after 90 days.
The recent analysis shows that inflammation increases post-cold exposure, and stress reduction occurs only 12 hours later which contradicts the belief that immediate relief can be attained from ice baths.
