Our study is the first to investigate the link between perimenopause and the onset of severe psychiatric conditions, finding women in this phase are over twice as likely to develop bipolar disorder.
Although many women face physical symptoms during perimenopause, the mental health implications, specifically the onset of severe psychiatric disorders like bipolar disorder, have been largely overlooked.
Clinics reported that amongst patients, many women who encountered mental health issues during perimenopause had previously not struggled with such conditions, indicating a significant link.
Our research utilized the UK Biobank, a database that provides access to anonymous medical and genetic data from half a million volunteers, to uncover these findings.
