Yana Kolpakova shared her negative experiences with healthcare professionals, stating, "One nurse advised people like me to get sterilized. When I was admitted to hospital for a ruptured fallopian tube, I was called a whore. I was accused of taking drugs, which is why they claimed anesthesia wouldn't work for me." This highlights the pervasive stigma and discrimination faced by individuals with HIV in Russia.
Stefania Hrydina described her experiences from childhood, stating, "During a medical examination in the city of Dnipro at the age of 18, I was told that people with HIV had no place there. For me, who is now 23, this was the last time I saw a doctor in Ukraine." This underscores the rejection and exclusion faced by HIV-positive patients in medical settings.
Valentina Mankiyeva recounted her experiences with ignorance around HIV, saying, "I have been living with HIV for 27 years and I simply cannot get used to this widespread ignorance. So, of course I explained to him that people with HIV can have healthy children." This illustrates the need for greater education on HIV and its transmission.
