On Second Count, ABC Says Oscar Viewership Increased
Briefly

ABC reported an 8% decline in Oscars viewership but later confirmed a rise to 19.7 million total viewers after including 1.6 million from Hulu. This marks four consecutive years of increased viewership. The under-50 demographic saw a 19% rise in viewership, although some Hulu users experienced technical difficulties. The situation reflects broader industry challenges in measuring and understanding audience engagement in the streaming era, as Nielsen adapts to evolving viewer habits.
Many of those additional viewers appear to have been adults under 50. On Monday, ABC said viewership among that age group had increased 3 percent from last year.
The Oscars streamed live on Hulu for the first time. The revised ratings figures issued by ABC cited that an additional 1.6 million viewers on the streaming service were not counted in the initial tally.
The Academy Awards attracted 19.7 million viewers, strong enough to eclipse last year's total of 19.5 million, ABC said, citing final data from Nielsen.
The viewing experience on Hulu, however, was far from perfect... some subscribers had trouble watching the Oscars at the beginning, and some did not see the finish.
