Contract workers for major tech companies like Meta, TikTok, and Google are uniting to form the Global Trade Union Alliance of Content Moderators (GTUACM). This initiative aims to address the mental health challenges and poor working conditions faced by content moderators who cope with traumatic material daily. The alliance was announced in Nairobi and emphasizes the need for better wages, job security, and mental health support as many moderators suffer from severe psychological effects due to their work, compounded by precarious contracts and surveillance.
The pressure to review thousands of horrific videos each day - beheadings, child abuse, torture - takes a devastating toll on our mental health, but it's not the only source of strain. Precarious contracts and constant surveillance at work add more stress.
GTUACM says that many moderators in the industry experience depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, suicidal ideation, and severe mental health consequences due to being exposed to such content without adequate support.
