An Asheville-based journalist and Poynter faculty member describes Hurricane Helene's aftermath - Poynter
Briefly

During the storm, my wife, dog, and I fled to the basement as trees fell around our home. Once the worst passed, I grabbed my phone, managing to text my family I was safe, but calls failed. The sense of relief was immense.
As I ventured down the mountain, I found that my neighbors were safe, too. Despite the devastation we faced, everyone was accounted for and alive. It was a moment of joy amidst the chaos.
Without service for three days, my community rallied together using chainsaws to clear fallen trees. We connected our neighborhood back to Asheville, showcasing the resilience and solidarity among neighbors during disaster.
When we finally regained cell service, my family heard my voice again. The emotional reunion highlighted how vital connection is, especially in times of crisis. We saw the importance of community support like never before.
