WhatsApp is launching a new feature called The Chat, designed for exclusive group chats among high-profile users like celebrities and athletes. This feature enhances WhatsApp Communities by allowing fans to follow real-time conversations during live sports events, starting with the NBA All Star Game. Users can engage through emojis and reactions but cannot comment. The initial Chat will include notable hosts and aims to enrich the sports viewing experience. This initiative aligns with a trend of increased direct engagement between publishers and their audiences as social media dynamics evolve.
"WhatsApp creates private spaces for conversation, and we know that group chats are where a lot of energy and engagement thrives," said Vivian Odior, the global head of marketing at WhatsApp.
"The days of everyone interacting on one feed are over," said web culture analyst Ryan Day, who writes the Garbage Day news.
