The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has referred a complaint about TikTok and its parent company ByteDance to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for violating or about to violate the law, specifically mentioning violations of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and the FTC Act without providing specifics.
The FTC stated that making this action public is not usual for them but believed it was in the public's interest. TikTok's previous issues with underaged users, dating back to Musical.ly, have been part of the FTC's investigation that started in 2019. The company previously got fined $5.7 million for these concerns.
