Canada's Competition Bureau has confirmed plans to take legal action against Google for alleged anticompetitive business practices in the online advertising industry. They accuse Google of using its dominant market position to lock competitors out of providing ad tech tools, severely impacting rivals' ability to compete.
'Google's conduct has prevented rivals from being able to compete on the merits of what they have to offer, to the detriment of Canadian advertisers, publishers and consumers,' stated Matthew Boswell, Commissioner of Competition, highlighting the negative impact on the market.
Google has faced scrutiny for giving its own ad tech tools preferential access to ad inventory, taking losses to undercut rival companies, and dictating unfavorable terms to its publisher clients that hinder competition.
In response to the allegations, Google's Dan Taylor stated that the complaint 'ignores the intense competition' in the marketplace, emphasizing that their tools help businesses and content creators connect with customers effectively.
