Apple's recent advertising campaign for Genmoji, a feature generating custom emojis, has drawn criticism for its juvenile design and departure from the brand's iconic marketing. Users have pointed out how the playful and crude aesthetic of the billboards clashes with Apple's past classy and minimalist ads. Comments on social media describe the marketing as embarrassing, questioning Apple's direction and execution. Overall, the campaign has been seen as diminishing the strength of Apple's historically innovative advertising reputation.
"Imagine it. Genmoji it." Reads the text on the ads, which sits atop one of various AI-generated emoji. And from the cut-and-paste look of the ads to the attempt to turn Gemoji into a verb, Apple's billboards are proving more than a little irritating.
"You know I support Apple in almost everything. But this is really embarrassing," One X user comments in response to a viral photo of a billboard depicting, er, a fried egg with limbs.
From fundamentally reimagining how humans could interact with computers to ...checks billboard... hot dog "genmoji" ??? Is apple ok?
The problem isn't just Apple's dogged commitment to trying to make personalised emoji 'a thing'. It's also the sheer crudeness of the design.
