Two students were found carrying guns in backpacks at Los Angeles high schools, raising concerns over campus safety amid ongoing violence and recent stabbings.
The safety and security of our students and campuses is our top priority," Chief of School Operations Andres Chait stated. "Los Angeles Unified has made tremendous strides to promote a culture of situational awareness and safety, and to partner with local law enforcement to ensure coverage and expediency."
In light of the recent incidents, school authorities emphasized the importance of the Los Angeles Schools Anonymous Reporting app, which allows community members to report suspicious activities anonymously.
The incidents reflect a complicated tension between the need for security and the community activism that led to a reduced presence of school police following the George Floyd protests.
