San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus has expressed serious concerns about bias against her due to her race and gender, calling it 'abuse of power.' This situation escalated after the Board of Supervisors began investigating her chief of staff while also looking into her actions. She believes that the scrutiny she faces is based more on these factors than on the merit of her qualifications as the county's first Latina sheriff.
Corpus lodged a bullying complaint against County Manager Mike Callagy, claiming he inappropriately queried her about possible personal relationships within the department, implying bias in a manner not likely directed at her predecessors, all of whom were male. She stated, 'I cannot imagine he would have made such a request of my predecessors, all of whom were men.' A clear example of how she perceives the double standards at play.
Following her firing of assistant sheriff Ryan Monaghan, who had spoken with the investigator hired by the supervisors, Corpus noted that the investigation into her office has expanded, raising questions about the motivations and intentions behind these actions. She sees the allegations against her as unfounded and believes they stem from a misunderstanding of her policies and intentions, especially regarding the controversial increase in deputy overtime.
Corpus has made it clear that if the Board of Supervisors does not take her complaints seriously, she will consider taking her case to the state level. Despite her challenges, she stands firmly by her decisions and her chief of staff, Victor Aenlle, emphasizing that the issues at hand reflect a broader problem of discrimination and misunderstanding based on her identity and leadership style.
