The National Weather Service has warned that this week’s Arctic blast could plummet temperatures to between 10 and 20 degrees below average across the Eastern US.
Heavy lake-effect snow is expected downwind of the Great Lakes, and snow squalls could hit various midwestern and northeastern states, adding to the extreme cold.
In contrast to the Eastern chill, Southern California is poised for a resurgence of Santa Ana winds, raising fire danger with gusts forecasted to reach up to 100 mph.
The severe weather conditions, including the Arctic air mass, are expected to affect heating budgets and increase the risk of frozen pipes in warmer states.
