A twin-engine Beechcraft 95 crashed shortly after takeoff from Catalina Airport, killing all five people onboard. The FAA is investigating the circumstances.
Avalon deputies received a cellphone notification just past 8 p.m., reporting possible injuries and providing the phone's location about one mile west of the airport.
Catalina Airport, known for its elevated location, has previously experienced serious crashes, highlighting longstanding safety concerns with its operations.
The plane, previously registered to a flight school operator in Santa Monica, made a flight from there to Avalon before the crash.
