In 2016, while mentoring youth at Arsenal Football Club, the alarming rate of knife crime and male suicide in London led to the initiation of the 'Young Men, Worst Fears' project. Conversations about absent fathers, poverty, and mental health revealed that discussing their worst fears helped young men articulate their feelings more openly. Participants, like Gabriel Shelsky and Alex Fraser, reflected on their evolving fears over time, showcasing how vulnerability fosters connection and growth amidst challenging circumstances.
I noticed regular and alarming newspaper reports about the deaths of local young men in knife-related stabbings and high levels of male suicide.
