Tenants from two buildings in East London have successfully challenged billionaire landlord John Christodoulou, deemed a 'rogue landlord' by a judge, resulting in a six-figure rent repayment. The residents of Olympic House and Simpson House claimed the landlord operated unlicensed houses in multiple occupation (HMOs), which left them exposed to safety risks, including inadequate fire measures. A tribunal ruled in their favor, awarding them a total of £263,555.68 as part of a rent repayment order initiated due to law violations on housing standards. Concerns remain about Christodoulou's compliance with the payment order.
During the hearing earlier in March, the judge in the first-tier tribunal (property chamber), Robert Latham, said: 'The respondent can only be characterised as a rogue landlord.'
This case shows how the law is rigged against renters. Christodoulou makes millions off our rent while flouting the law and cutting corners on safety.
