Twenty years after the devastating 7/7 bombings in London, survivor Steven Desborough reflects on his traumatic experience. He recalls the moment of the explosion, the eerie silence that followed, and the desperate attempts to comfort fellow passengers amidst chaos. With basic first-aid knowledge, Desborough sought to calm those around him, even as he felt helpless. He often remembers the victims and strives to honor their memories, expressing a wish that he could have done more to help. Desborough's account underscores the enduring psychological effects and the human need for connection in times of crisis.
I tried to reassure people and let them know everything was going to be OK, that we'll do this together. There were a couple of people I spoke to, and we just tried to have a conversation.
I wish I could have done more. I did my best on the day. I think about the people who died often. A lot of the people there were about my age, they had their whole lives in front of them.
