The Borough Triangle development in Southwark, covering an area equivalent to one and a half football pitches, was narrowly approved amid controversies. Several established buildings, notably the 100-year-old Institute of Optometry and Mercato Metropolitano, will be demolished to pave the way for new structures, including a community center and public spaces. While a temporary location will accommodate some traders, there are concerns over the repercussions of uprooting 423 workers and the market's local role, as highlighted by community advocate Nina Wessel, who stressed the market's importance in fostering inclusivity and local engagement.
The development will lead to the closure of Mercato Metropolitano, which has been a central hub for the community, attracting over 600,000 visitors annually.
Nina Wessel emphasized the impact of losing Mercato Metropolitano, stating it has become the heart of the neighborhood, providing safe spaces and activities for diverse groups.
While the development includes public space and new community facilities, the immediate upheaval for workers and traders raises concerns about community impact.
A 200,000 relocation fund has been established to assist those displaced by the development, acknowledging the disruption caused to businesses and their employees.
