Oxford Street could become a car-free space as Mayor of London opens consultation
Briefly

The Mayor of London has initiated consultations regarding the transformation of Oxford Street into a predominantly car-free area. This effort aims to create an urban space focused on shopping, leisure, and cultural events, comparing Oxford Street to global iconic pedestrian thoroughfares. While the proposal aims chiefly at pedestrianisation, some vehicle access will remain necessary. Economic analyses predict substantial increases in job creation and Gross Value Added (GVA), as well as reductions in road accidents, supporting the project's rationale for change.
Although the aim is for pedestrianisation, the consultation states "removing most vehicles on Oxford Street", suggesting some access will remain essential during the transformation.
The consultation expects pedestrianisation could increase Oxford Street's GVA by nearly £82m in a year, while supporting around 781 jobs in the area.
