Spring equinox is UK's warmest day of year so far
Briefly

On Thursday, parts of England experienced the warmest day of the year with temperatures rising above 20C, notably reaching 20.6C in London. This record setting day coincided with the spring equinox, though it also followed a chilly night with frost in Scotland and northern England. Afternoon highs are expected between 12-21C across the UK. This warming trend is typical for March, a transitional month, but is exacerbated by climate change, making such warm spells significantly more likely according to scientists.
According to the Met Office, Northolt in London reached 20.6C (69.1F) by lunchtime, exceeding 2025's previous high of 19.7C (67.5F) set earlier in March.
Although not unusual, this type of warmer spell in spring is made more likely due to climate change. Scientists suggest this week's temperatures have been made at least one-to-three times more likely by climate change across a lot of the UK.
Temperatures fell to -7.9C (17.8F) in Braemar on Wednesday night and it was a widely frosty start on Thursday across Scotland and northern England.
During this brief spell of warm weather temperatures will be roughly 4-7C (7.2-12.6F) above the March average, which is a transition season.
